A Language Reactor alternative for the films you own

Language Reactor turns Netflix and YouTube into a language lab. If your films and series live on your own Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server, or as files on your computer, Lalea brings the same way of learning to them: two subtitle lines, a tap on any word, the word saved with its scene, and a short review every day.

Built for the library you already have

Language Reactor is built around streaming: Netflix, YouTube, podcasts, web pages and books. If most of what you watch is there, it is a good choice. Lalea starts from the other side - the films and series you keep on your own server or computer:

How it works in Lalea

  1. Pick your languages. The one you learn and the one you understand - any pair of 115. Mark the words you already know in one go, or import them from Anki or Quizlet.
  2. Connect your server. Plex: sign in to Plex and choose the server. Jellyfin or Emby: enter the address you use to open the server away from home and confirm with Quick Connect or your username and password. Lalea keeps only an access key, never the password. No server? Open a video file from your computer.
  3. Press play and tap words. The original is on top, the translation below. A tap pauses the film and opens the word card; save the word and it lands in your vocabulary with the line, the film and the moment.
  4. Review a few minutes a day. Lalea brings each word back when it is about to slip away, with the scene you met it in.

Watching on a TV

Lalea has an app for Android TV and Google TV. If you prefer to keep watching in the Plex, Jellyfin or Emby app on your TV, open Lalea's second screen on your phone: it shows the current line and its translation in time with the film, and every word can be tapped. For TV players that show only one subtitle track, the free dual subtitle maker joins two languages into one .srt file.

Questions

Is Lalea free?

Yes, you can start and keep learning for free. A new account gets 7 days of Pro to try everything, with no card, so nothing is ever charged; after that the account stays on Free with all its words. See Help for what Free and Pro include.

Are my films uploaded anywhere?

No, Lalea never uploads or stores your films. Video plays from your own server to your browser; when your browser cannot reach the server directly, the stream passes through Lalea's server without being stored. Your server has to be reachable from the internet.

Which languages?

115 languages, in any pair: the one you learn and the one you translate into.

Can I use it on YouTube?

A Lalea browser extension for YouTube and other sites is being prepared; this page is about the films you own.
