Your films and series - 115 languages

Learn a language from what you watch and read.

Two subtitle lines in any pair of languages. Tap any word to see what it means right there, save it with the line where you met it, and review it every day - in your films and series now, and soon on any page you read.

New accounts get 7 days of Pro. No card needed.

How it works

Three steps. The first one takes about a minute, once.

1

Pick your languages

The language you learn and the one you understand - any pair of 115. Mark the words you already know in one go, or bring them from Anki or Quizlet.

2

Press play

Films from your own Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server, or a video file from your computer. Lalea shows the original and the translation, and translates with AI when your language is missing.

3

Tap a word

Its meaning in this very line, a picture, examples. Save it and it lands in your vocabulary with the line, the film and the moment - and comes back for review when it is about to slip away.

What you get

Built by someone who watches every film in the original and wanted his own library to teach him.

◎

Words with their scene

Every word keeps the line, the film and the timestamp. One click takes you back to the moment you met it.

↻

Practice that sticks

Spaced review built from your own words, several kinds of exercises, a daily goal and a hedgehog that grows with your vocabulary.

⇄

Any language on any line

115 languages in any pair. Original and translation, two originals, or swap them around.

▣

Watch on the big screen

In the player right in your browser - or, with Plex, on the TV with your phone as a second screen that follows the film line by line.

◇

The rest of the internetsoon

The Chrome extension brings the same words and card to YouTube, Netflix and other video sites, to any web page, and to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini - where the AI can answer at your level.

✓

Leave any time

Export your words as a CSV file for Anki. Delete your account and your data from the account page.

Just starting? The most common words of a language - with pictures and translations into your language, open without an account.

Why not just...

Good tools exist. We did not find one that brings your own films, word cards and review together without setup.

Questions

Do you store my videos?

No. Video plays from your own server or from your computer. We keep your sign-in, your settings, your words and the subtitle lines prepared for you. To translate, subtitle text goes to an AI provider - without your name or account. See the privacy policy for the full list.

Which servers work?

Plex, Jellyfin and Emby. Without a server you can open a video file from your computer right in the browser.

What if a film has no subtitles in my language?

Lalea translates the ones it has with AI. If a film on your Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server has no subtitles at all, Pro recognises the speech and makes them.

Which languages?

115, in any pair - learn French through Spanish or Korean through English. The site itself speaks all of them too.

I already know many words. Do I start from zero?

No. Mark the 500 to 5,000 most common words as known in one go, or import your words from Anki, Quizlet, Language Reactor or a spreadsheet.

Is there an app?

Yes, for Android phones, tablets and Android TV - download it here. On iPhone and iPad, Lalea works in Safari.

Can I watch on my TV?

With Plex, yes: play the film in a Plex app on the TV and open Lalea on your phone - the current line and its translation follow the movie.

How much is Pro?

$4.99 a month or $39 a year. It is not on sale yet: every new account gets 7 days of Pro, then stays on Free. Your words never depend on the plan.

Do you provide films or subtitle files?

No. Lalea does not host or share films, and the only subtitle file you can download is the one the dual subtitle tool builds from files you add yourself. It works with the media on your own server and the files you add, which you confirm you have the right to use. Right holders can reach us through the copyright page.
